Our
learning
goals for the month...

Reading/Lecture & Étude Sociale: For the next couple of months we will be reading non-fiction texts in French and in English. These texts will focus on our current Social Studies topic: Heritage and Identity. Students will learn about early settler life in Upper Canada.

Writing/Écriture: Students will produce a variety of non-fiction writing pieces such as biographies, letters, explanations & concept maps - all of these related to what we are reading.

Media Literacy: Understanding Non-fiction Text Features - subtitles, diagrams, photographs, labels, maps, glossary, etc.. how these features help us understand what we are reading.

Math:
Our work with Multiplication and Division took longer than anticipated in the month of Feb...but the basics are so important! So...our 2D geometry unit will now be done during the month of March. Some work with patterning will be done in combination with this unit(flips, slides and turns) and growing/shrinking patterns of geometric shapes.

EQAO
In preparation for the EQAO test which will be administered at the end of May, the students are encouraged to work on the website which provides sample test questions for both math and language.
Log on to www.eqao.com. Go to EQAO Educator Resources. Select a year. Scroll down to Primary Division. Select from the three options in the Student Assessment Booklets (Language 1-Language 2 or Mathematics).
Working on a hard copy, of the selected booklet, will allow the students to become familiar with the format of the test and provide important opportunities to practice multiple choice questions.
They would also benefit from extra practice using a calculator as in some sections of the test they are permitted to do so. When they add and subtract using decimals they often have difficulty properly reading the results. For example, if the calculator shows the total amount of money as 5.6 they record this answer when they should write it as 5.60$.

I also wanted to make you aware of another helpful website which contains math practice work: Grade 3 Math Strands.

Homework challenges: Beginning this month your child will be bringing home some math problem-solvers. "Word problems" can be tricky because of the reading and deciphering of meaning that needs to happen before even tackling the math. We have been working on strategies such as looking for and highlighting important words and using pictures/numbers/words to solve the question. Please help your child tackle these take-home questions.

RELIGION:
A special congratulations to our class for their leadership in the February mass - they did a wonderful job! It was great to see that some parents were able to join us too - thank you!

The virtue for March: forgiveness

As we begin the season of Lent students will learn about:
  • prayer as a continuous conversation with Jesus
  • an understanding of Mary as the first disciple and Mother of the church - learning specifically about the mysteries of the Rosary
  • understand that the Holy Spirit assists us to develop and strengthen our relationship with Jesus

Family Life:
Now that project activities from all Global Schools have been submitted to the Global Data Project we will have the opportunity to look more closely at the similarities and differences of children around the world. All project activities can be viewed at Making Sense of the World. The most recent activities have included Religions We Practise and Languages we speak. Here is a sample activity our class created:

Dates to remember:
March 4 - Pancake Day!
March 5 - Mass at Blessed Sacrament for Ash Wednesday (12:30)
March 7 - P.A. day
Happy March Break!!
March 18 - Mass at St. Agnes at 12:00 (if weather permits, as we will be walking)

As always, please send me a note in your child's agenda if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to a wonderful month...Spring is just around the corner!
